Not just safer, in one case, healthier.
My vision situation sort of takes me down a few notches when it comes to my cooking. Gone are the days of opening a Mexican cook book to whip up something new. I can't read the information, A magnifying glass is basically useless. Good news for me is that I can make things from memory, and I have learned that a tiny amount of any spice is now whatever looks right in my hand. I have moved to a more plant-based diet anyway, so I'm good.
But I learned that a gas stove is not my friend! I can;t see the flame! I don't need to work with hot stove parts, so I found two better solutions:
Item 1) An Induction Plate. It's a high-tech hotplate, and I love it. It works only with stainless steel cookware because the induction process uses magnetism! The cooking plate is not hot, so You can't burn yourself. The pan or pot heats up fast, and if you remove the thing from the plate you get beeped and the plate stops. Put the pan back and it continues cooking. It does require stainless steel cookware, so that may be an investment. But I found several pieces (fry pan, also a pot with a steamer part as well, and both fry pan and pot were only about $25 each.
* IUPDATE: I found a simple Stainless Steel Adapter plate that lets you use your existing aluminum stuff. It transfers the heat to aliuminix or other cookware. Pretty cheap, about $17. No need to buy a new fry pan for $50.
Item 2) Did I just say "fry pan"? Wait, read about the Air-Fryer. This replaces a deep fryer (which I have never used) and it does more than you'd think. Frying with oil is so '80s, and so not healthy. The air fryer sounds like a joke, but no, it works. It surrounds the food with hot air circulating and getting all sides. Air fried chicken tenders come out looking fried brown and crunchy, devoid of oil. Not dry meat, but no oily fingers. And it can bake bicuits. It can make toast. French fries. Hamburger patties. If hamburger or chicken, any grease cooks out and is drained into a catch pan. It leaves the meat oil free. I was skeptical, now I'm a convert.
My stove has a rack on top to let my microwave sit there. I do not use my stove at all. My kitchen is complete and I am cooking, baking, toasting, steaming, and frying, all without a cookbook. And I have not burned myself.
