One night, as I was lying in bed asleep. the power went out. I was awakened by a phone call! My iPhone is set to not answer calls after 6pm so I am not bothered ny sales calls. Of course there us a way to mark numbers that will get through in case it's a family or my helper, and those numbers have a distinctive ring tone. Since this call rang with a curious jingle, and I was now awake, I waited to hear who it was? Phone set to auto answer, I did not need to reach for it. Good thing! The power was out! The voice was PG*&E, calling to announce the outage was affecting 1200 homes and that it was expected to be restored by 1:30 a.m." So that was okay, it was after all, not too much trouble at 10p.m., so I was fine. But I realized two additional things I had not considered when talking about being prepared: 1) I did not have to reach for my phone, in the dark, a smartphone lights up. I don't think Flip phones do that when they are not yet flipped open. 2) When the call ends, it is dark again. What if a person needs to get up for a snack? Okay, …for a trip to the bathroom? It is dark, you ned a light, but you don't have a flashlight on your nightstand. My iPhone will listen to me ask it it to turn on the flashlight!° Bingo!* I don't think a Flip phone has any similar feature. * I checked and found some Androids will listen for that request, so Android users, read this.
