Disclaimer: I have an Apple watch Series 3, and it has called for help when I fell. Of course I recommend the watch. To be fair, I also looked for other brands, but my first attempts to find anything similar, all started with "One month free..." and I did not find a real cost for using them. Here, you can try: Best Choices. See what you can find.
To compare another option, look at the FitBits with similar features.
So I now unapologetically, tell you why you want the Apple Watch. Once you have it, you pay nothing more to use it.
An Apple Watch Series 3 is about $200. It has fall detection and has no continuing fees to use it. The watch can be used without a Smartphone, but that might be a challenge; it will require tapping the screen or sliding a button on the watch face! Remember, a fall might not leave you just mumbling about your bad luck while your watch is calling for help. You will get a call (yes, on the watch!) and you can deny your need for help, but of course if you are unconscious, there will be no word from you, so EMTs on the way. It is really better to also have a Smartphone that will call and send a GPS map to show the EMTs where you are. If you think this all costs too much money, you might find a way.
So, do you really need a Smartphone to call 011? The watch and the phone work together. No. Read this.
What good is the Apple watch if you don't fall down? Well, it is a Life Monitor! It keeps track of your heart rate and pulse, it tracks your exercise, your steps, the stairs climbed, and your sleep! It will keep all the details in an iPhone's Health app. And during that day it will remind you to get up and move for a few minutes. It can do more, but you can read all about it here. And oh yes, it tells you what time it is! Really! It TELLS you if you tap the screen, you hear the time announced. Too much? It also displays your choice of watch faces that display the expected "hands".
