In the words of Stevie Ray Vaugn, singing Crossfire:
"Money's tight, nothin' free,
Won't somebody come and rescue me!"
Indeed.Nothing is free, and a big change brought on by our years of staying in place has created a need for delivery of pretty much everything. We now have new services looking to handle that, but watch out for the charges! They vary considerably. If you have a neighbor with a car, or you are the one with the car, maybe coördinate a group trip to pick up at the store, then those in the car chip in for gas. Bonus? Get the groceries then for the drive-thru at Taco Bell.
These grocery stores offer online shopping; You browse their site (you will be happy to have a larger screen! Check this page to see why) and add to a cart. Having that list bagged for pick-up can carry a charge, and the delivery is another charge. But note: Got your SNAP EBT card? That can be used to pay for deliver as well as the food! Remember that non-food items will need your credit card.
Here are snapshots of your choices in Placerville If you have experiences and want to add a comment, good or bad, about any store, please do. At the bottom of the page, see REPLY in the right corner. Tap that and add tour thoughts.
Raley's has a good variety, and produce is fresh, Items listed allow you to tap the description to open a window with nutrition numbers. etc. Add choices to the cart, they charge $7 for gathering the order (unless you spend $100+!) You pay and set a time for pick-up. Later you go to the store, park at the pick-up side and call them. They bring your order to you. Don't have a way to go to the store? They use Instacart to deliver, according to the website, that would be $9.95. Check that Instacart link, it should be less when you pay for a month of deliveries. Phone users, check this page for an app for all of this business
Walmart: FWIW, we go to Folsom for curbside pick up. Folsom has more choices than the local store (not much produce in our store!) Even the Super store runs out of things but they substitute similar products at their discretion. They say they use FedEx or UPS for shipping, but they also offer delivery. The online order form says: "Free Delivery with Walmart+ : Delivery as soon as same day for a $98 annual or $12.95 monthly fee." So there's your free delivery. And yes, there's an App for shopping. (Walmart+ offers a 30-day free trial)
Safeway has a somewhat awkward presentation method (IMHO) and I wonder how it would serve those shopping with a small phone screen? I use a 27" monitor and the images of products were still pretty small. But if you can manage (and I have heard many do,) your first order will be delivered FREE, IF you spend $75! I did not find any other way to get delivery without a subscription that gets "unlimited free delivery!" when you join FreshPass for $12.99 a month, (plus any tax) or $99.00 for a year! That doesn't sound like free to me, but a month includes as many deliveries as you might want. I saw no mention of a minimum order., so that might work out pretty well. Yes, there's an App for that.
Save Mart has two locations in Placerville, and they also use Instacart for deliveries. Save Mart prices are between Walmart and Safeway. Here is a snapshot to compare. And FWIW Valy Mart and Safeway both have the best deal on Beyond Meat Burger Patties at $16 for a two point box.
Target is different. You fill your cart and when you order delivery, a Shipt worker goes to the store and picks your items! Then the delivery? Shipt charges $10.00 for a single order. but $10.99 for a month, or $99 a year, for what? Unlimited deliveries? It's unclear: Shipt web page. See prices for yourself. Phone users: yes, there's an app for that.
Whole Foods in Folsom? Famously called"Whole Paycheck" with a reputation for a more expensive shopping experience, must have changed when Amazon bought it. It will surprise you to see that in my find some foods to compare prices, the prices were mostly within 50¢, and in one case way less than what I pay at a local store. See this all list of common items and what they are selling for.
The catch? You need to be a member of Amazon Prime, and you have to go there. Too far for delivery. But if you are a SNAP card holder, that Prime membership is about $7 a month. But since candy and I go to Folsom once a month and drive past Whole Foods, maybe this is a store to try with a pick-up order! I think it looks promising. Going to Folsom? Here is the App to start shopping.
