Trust me, I am, or was, a TV junkie/ Like most everyone, I had a list of favorites, had my favorite news source, and rarely turned off the tv from 5am until 10pm. Oh sure, it was off in the middle of the day, but every day had something I had to watch.
Then my vision crapped out on me. Lots of people ask if it's advanced macular degeneration (AMD. Mayo Clinic explains it), and now I simply say yes. But while many then confess to having it, I also have dealt with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR! There's a name, huh? All that means I have limited vision and now TV is a mystery!
Oh, I can watch watch, but most everything is blinding white or turkey darkness, with occasional scenes of gray with unidentifiable characters talking. Not loads of fun.
So I cut the cord, as they say. Quit my Comcast TV feed. I really had to think about that, but here I am two months later with a suggestion you might also be happier without the cost of a big list of tv you will never watch, going instead with Internet and wi-fi instead. DON'T STOP READING, I will explain,...and it is not a technical description. And if you do not have a computer, no matter, you don't need one. Read on...
First, the Comcast Xfinity (Internet) service i cheaper. Next, yes, you will need a mobile device, A.K.A. a tablet (think iPad or some version) to handle the wi-fi connection, and then you get one more gadget to translate that wi-fi into a TV signal! Presto! Now you are able to watch your YV,
Huh? Wait why is this better? Or cheaper> Well, it's better because you can get a huge number of TV by what is now called streaming service. Sort of like radio is a streaming service of voice or music, now video is delivered in a similar way. You can watch movies on a tablet (or a smartphone , but wow, pretty small images.) So a tablet is needed. You can start at $50, but of course spending a bit more is better.
Then you need one of a few options to convert the signal to TV. You could get Apple TV or a Roku box, but I have to admit Amazon sells a cheaper device called a Firestick! More on that in a minute.
Finally, how does this save money? Well, my Comcast package was $85/mo for really minimal tv and my Internet service, all together. Most people want more than basic TV to watch sports or the Food chanel. That costs lots more. But cutting back to Internet dropped my to $62/mo. ( a NEW sign-up goes for about $45. I get screwed by being a loyal customer. Nice.) Once you can choose what to watch, you subscribe to Netflix ($9/mo) or Amazon Prime ($6.50/mo) and have ll the videos and movies you want. What about TV? You can subscribe to several services like Sling or Hulu, etc. Note, you can spend more on subscriptions that the TV packages cost, but you are not paying for 50 channels you will never watch.
I will add more to his, or answer questions as best I can. But I am a happy video watcher for less money than my TV was costing.
Check back, I will explain more free or cheap ways to get programs.
