Okay, straight to the point: Sugar is in practically everything you eat. So what? I am a big advocate for informing the uninformed. A Type 2 diabetic, I simply have to at least try to get people to stop and think, hoping to inspire others to get checked. Listen to this TED Talk about sugar, and the damage it can cause to your health. It will be important to know that SUGAR is a general term here. All foods that are not meet or dairy are sources of Carbohydrates, and Carbs digest to become blood glucose, glucose being a major form of sugar. Fructose and Lactose are also sugars. Manu people thinkably of white table sugar. Bad as that is, even your bag of potato chips is a load of sugar in disguise. Now, read on...The recommenced daily limit for sugar is 37 grams (9 teaspoons) for men, 25 grams (6 teaspoons) for women; still sounds like a heck of a lot! You probably feel you are safe from needing to be concerned. But do you actually know? I do know that it's easy to not know because early signs are not always the same list you might have heard on a TV blurb. It is easy to simply not notice little signals. Then one day, maybe a casual visit to a doctor, a blood test might surprise you with a diagnosis of Pre-diabetes! Or worse, full-blown diabetes. So step away from the PopTarts, start looking at food labels for sugar, added sugar, and any ingredient that ends in "-ose". Don't buy it again. - Please find out. One in three are unaware of being pre-diabetic. With 80+ residents, stats would suggest 25+ are in the group. And it's called Adult-Onset Diabetes for a reason. Age 60 and older is a very popular time to be diagnosed.
