I go to the room with the plan to be the first to take a seat. Not because I fear missing out on a chair, rather to get the seat closest to the door so I can get out fast!
Today's meeting started a bit late, and the time I think maybe there were 12 people in the room. I expect this now, having been to all but one (when I was not notified) and the first ever meeting was in January. probably 50+ showed up, then the next two months each diminished by half, then half again. Norm seems to be about 15.
The important topics were:
1. Carpets in some vacant rooms are going to be replaced. How this matters to those of us still here is as much a mystery as most all other topics. But a few people seemed to enjoy complaining about smell and adding jokes.
2. The next big topic was ... Christmas! And why not, with only a few months to go? I was busy marking my calendar when I heard the bad news: it would be a potluck, but HQ would only buy a turkey. Anything else would be a BYO? contribution. I volunteered lynne227 for Jello salad. Then came the warning that many here do not want to eat things prepared by other residents, so I removed both Lynne's name from the list and the date from my calendar. Bah, humbug.
3. If Christmas planning wasn't enough, here came the big surprise: There will be some sort of Halloween show. Oh boy, a Halloween show. A gruff voice came out of the corner behind me to make it loud and clear (emphasis on loud) to announce that SHE (mystery woman that she was) would produce the show she would have nothing to do with cleaning up! Nothing. It was not revealed what this show would be about, but I already don't care. And no trick or treaters will begin (for candy, I presume, not the show) doors will be locked early on the Day of the Kids.
4. Worth noting: Somebody asked when there would be a cover for the Smokers Area? The answer was that they were looking for a storm-proof solution that should be installed before the rains hit! So the smokers can keep their butts dry? I see that as a priority.
I must point out that the request *I* made in January (and twice again since) to have new benches to sit out in some sun for fresh air had to wait to see IF money could be found? I think that search is on going.
The meeting trailed off with mentions of homeless being less a problem, bathrooms being locked as part of the plan. Then a half-effort was made to distribute some sort of cupcakes, and the meeting was adjourned. Roberts Rules of Order forgotten, I got up and out. Not fast enough, but I was happy to be headed down the hall to my cave.
