I have made a decision to attract the attention of a few people here who do not speak English, at least well enough for some general conversation. We have residents who speak Korean or Rumanian, and the manager had to use Google Translate to create a notice about an impending test of the fire alarm system!
Ever since learning that, I have thought about getting a group together for some ESL (English as a Second Language). I was looking for some info on what it required, and found nothing. So I called the library. Once I described my idea and having to reject books or even tapes (tase player> SO last century!ut ended up with the suggestion that we just talk! The whole idea of ESL is to NOT defend on another's language but for th other(s) to learn English by immersion. Clearly there will be time when a translation will be needed, so I'm I can use my iPad and maybe share the wi-fi signal from the office! All I can do is ask.
So every Wednesday at 9am*, for an hour, I might get one or more people willing to talk with me in the Rec room on the 2nd floor, just next to the elevator.
*NOTE that I was late my own first day )July 3rd), arriving at 9:15. I will do better next week/

What a neat idea, huh! Unfortunately, neither of the women bothered to even reply with a "Thanks, but not interested!" in their appropriate language, because they see no need to learn more English, I . I wish them well. Good luck ordering aburrito with pantomime.
