Be Ready for the Dark: IPDATED for 2022
LIGHT:.Candles are so last century, and dangerous! A flashlight is obvious, but you get more utility from a battery-powered LED lantern. There are lots of options for LED Lanterns on Amazon, but here is a set of two for under $20.00. Many are collapsable to fit in a drawer. Powered with AA batteries, they can provide good light for the whole night. You will also want extra AA batteries: Get 20 Amazon Basics for under $10.00.
Also take notice of this Power Bank. It is a very useful item in an emergency because it is a solar powered backup power source for your cellphone, plus it is a powerful flashlight! Try using the stairs in the dark! This light is the one I want with me. This is a really good one for $24.00. I own it and love it.
COMMUNICATION: Let’s assume you have a cellphone*. A land line works when power is out, but you are tethered! If you have a cellphone, that would be better as long as the cell towers are not shut down (Note: Towers are now fitted with solar batteries and are going to work!) A real bonus would be to have some music or an audio book on your cellphone to help with boredom if the power for a long while. Note that Solar Power Bank? It can be recharged by sitting it in the window, direct sun not required! You will use your phone for hours; get that power bank.
* TIP: What you really want is a smartphone instead of a flip-phone. A smartphone will have a data plan and you could access the internet to find news and other helpful information.
But cell phones use power, so… Get a Power Bank battery charger for your phone. This Power Bank also has two very bright LED lights fora great emergency light source. Under $25.00.
AN EMERGENCY RADIO? I did buy one but it was more frustrating than helpful! It gave me information for all parts of California and in chunks. I did not think it helped. I feel pretty certain that a Smart phone will do a better job because it could access local weather and news on the Internet.
Don't forget to have some food that won't need heating! Pork and beans would be good. Snack bars, treats, munchies! If you want more comfort, your gas stove should still work. Coffee? Soup? You're set.
With luck, it's all kept in the closet. But who knows what's coming? Be ready for the unexpected.
